Effective leadership requires more than strong operational skills. But executives with know-how and ability to solve “wicked tasks” do not occur as often as necessary. For example, only 8% of the 6,000 UK executives polled in 2015 appeared to be strategic leaders capable of making effective transformations. They challenge the common opinion, keep their strategy flexible, and empower their workers instead of commanding them. Strategic leadership comes into view when the traditional approach does not work. At such sharp turns, companies realize that their CEOs do not act strategically but rather keep pace with the old ways.
There are several principles of strategic leadership open for the executive community to adopt. Contrary to the common opinion, strategic leaders do not overtake all power but distribute it evenly downwards. Autonomy is king for them so that employees at the lower levels make their own decisions. To make a decision, individuals need the information they do not have. A strategic leader undertakes an open-book management. It allows them to share the strategy with all employees, not only with the “chosen ones”.
Empowering employees is greater than decision-making. Strategic leaders also need to foster innovation and welcome their people to create multiple ways to success. Every idea can fail so that multiple alternatives are vital. Strategic leaders do not make their people afraid of a failure, they encourage to pay closer attention to it. An error reported at the early stage can still be fixed.
Constant development is crucial for leaders as well. There is no steadfast managers strategy that is always effective. Flexibility and the ability to learn from new experience gives way to strategic thinking and new success.

The role of leadership in averting conflict and promoting unity

Violence follows in footsteps of international affairs. Since the ancient times, people fought for territory, its natural resources, and control over its parts. As societies advanced, ideology, national control, and global influence became more important. We do not conquer territories like barbaric tribes once did, but we still hope to gain control over what is not ours. Political leaders play the main part in resolving conflicts or escalating them. Apparently, leaders pursue different styles, from authoritarian to democratic nurturing different values. Creating a conflict or suppressing it is up to political leaders with respect to social activists, humanitarians, and spiritual figures.
The theory of holistic leadership states that a leader must encompass analytical thinking alongside innovation, emotional and spiritual values. A holistic leader can analyze the complexity of their society, nurture creativity, shape the behavior of followers, and promote moral and ethical values among them. But certainly, not every leader is holistic. Some sovereigns aim to change the reality with violent actions. The others are what we call ‘Great Heart’ leaders. They withstand violence as the manifestation of evil and teach their people to give up on revenge.
A part of political leaders of the 20th century promoted peace and unity through breaking the Communist rule. Mikhail Gorbachev facilitated democratization of Eastern European countries, for which he was granted Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. The next year, Lech Walesa became the first non-Communist President of Poland. Some other highly-respectable leaders withstood racial segregation. Nelson Mandela brought together South Africa previously divided by apartheid. In the US, Martin Luther King Jr facilitated a steady condemnation of racial inequalities. He and many more social activists all over the world strove for civil rights, which made them true leaders for many.

The Impact of Volunteerism on the Development of Leadership Skills

It looks like leaders possess a lot of skill specific to their business. Indeed, high expertise is the first quality to help professionals get promoted. But advanced business skills are not enough for a leader. Top managers shall work with people and organize teams, which requires strong emotional intelligence. Interestingly, volunteering is the best option for nurturing emotional intelligence as it develops empathy, trustworthiness, and team spirits.
There are two major reasons why we volunteer. We either gain certain skills or benefit to our community. Both of them are rewards though not monetary ones, and we clearly understand why we need to volunteer. Self-awareness is important for business too. Leaders must know the prospects of their business to set realistic goals and effectively distribute tasks for the staff.
Though volunteering does not give us an extraordinary business experience, it helps to better learn people and their habits. Working among people, we can see what troubles them and what makes them happy. We observe how they respond to us and learn how to become closer to our clients.
Volunteering is all about leaving one’s comfort zone. The workload is overwhelming whether we work in a cafe or help charities, and we often have to deal with distressed clients. Running a business is nothing different. If we are ready to complete an impressive amount of work and successfully interact with indignant people, then we are better prepared to challenges of leadership.
And last, volunteering helps people to build confidence and develop a passion to what they do. There is no chance of becoming a leader unless one is truly inspired by their business. Helping people for free, volunteers are individuals who make the difference. They can never underestimate their abilities again, not after they have made the society better.

Endangered languages

As a social system, language holds people together. Many of us consider language to be a core indicator of one’s national identity necessary to get on well with other members of the community. Over the time, many small communities abandoned the language they spoke. A language becomes extinct when people do not speak it anymore. This process happened to some regions of sub-Saharan Africa and South America. Some communities merged, the others were suppressed by the majority. Anyway, languages disappeared either because people were forced to speak another language or they voluntarily chose the language of the majority.
Over the last 500 years, Europe and Asia Minor lost 75 languages, and North America became 115 languages short. Extinction of languages happens naturally as people try to be more unified in their communication. Nevertheless, we feel entitled to preserve more languages as they make up a cultural heritage of the society. These are the languages our ancestors spoke, and we cannot lose them merely because people do not find them popular anymore. Unfortunately, we cannot put a language on the display for people to walk by and admire their heritage. Instead, we have to preserve its speakers and pass the language on to their children.
Preserving languages of minorities is a problem because many communities would rather assimilate with the majority to gain more social privileges. Many Americans have forgotten the language of their ancestors as there is no practical use of it in their life. Minorities can hardly preserve their language because there are no schools speaking and teaching their language. Even if they would like to pass this knowledge, they are currently discouraged to do it.

Whether privileged or not, rural population has no other option but to gradually move to cities. Urban areas offer better workplace, housing, and education opportunities, and for some people, moving to a city is the only way to find a job. Urbanization is a natural process that has been happening for millennia. In all times, people formed larger communities to be better off and feel more secure facing daily challenges. But now living in a large community is not enough. It is much better to function within a huge industrialized society that can offer more than just land and people to work on it.
Multiple benefits of rural people derived from industrialization. Non-agricultural economy offers a broader range of jobs, many of them more profitable than agriculture. There are all sorts or employment opportunities so that people with any education would find employment here. Industries enhance commerce that brings more wealth to the city. Better social services bring a proper sanitation, education, and healthcare that may not exist in rural places.
At some points, urbanization becomes excessive, and city dwellers start experiencing problems. Overcrowded slums generate poverty and unemployment. People cannot find a job and affordable housing because of the enormous income gap between city dwellers. Population cannot reach a higher quality of life because those with poor skills live far below the poverty line. Crime and sanitation problems throw people a couple of centuries back when sewage flowed in the streets.
Creating more jobs and cheap housing seems the only way out for cities. Without no dwelling and a basic job, people cannot reach for more benefits of the urban lifestyle.
